Hasan Hasanović, curator at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, points out the utmost importance of the project, especially bearing in mind that the oral history will be available in the archives of this institution for all researchers from all over the world.
"If we don't remember, don't write down, don't record that experience, the future generations will not be able to learn from it. And that is the essence of everything. Who will speak if we don't - those who survived ", adds Hasanović.
In the first phase of the project, 30 testimonies of genocide survivors were recorded at locations in Srebrenica, Tuzla and Sarajevo. Along with their testimonies, survivors also donated to the Memorial Center items they had with them when leaving Srebrenica or items belonging to their loved ones who did not survive.
"Our interlocutors believe that it is very important for them to tell their personal stories and hand over these items in order to preserve them in the future, so that as many people as possible know what happened to them, but also to their loved ones." In this way, they keep from oblivion one of the greatest tragedies in modern human history, "said Lamija Grebo, a BIRN BiH journalist.
The ultimate goal of the project, funded by the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is to record 100 testimonies, then select 20 stories to be used alongside personal items and presented through a permanent exhibition at the Memorial Center.
